Hello dear readers, I hope you are doing well. Increasing number of heart patients and other related problems make it necessary to be aware of the common causal factors and some preventive measures that can be taken. This article is intended to give you an insight about lipids, their types and the steps that you can take to live a healthy life by making some changes in lifestyle.

Lipids are the components present in the body and are essential for the development. According to National Health portal, 25-30% urban and 15-20% rural population is suffering from lipid related problems. The level of lipid either gets high or low in the blood. This situation is known as dyslipidemia.

Types of lipid

There are three types of lipids present in the body. It includes LDL, HDL and triglycerides. LDL is bad cholesterol which is harmful for the health. It can cause plaque in the blood vessels. HDL is good cholesterol because it helps in controlling the level of LDL in the blood. Triglycerides are those lipids which are formed when calories are not burnt in the body so its high level can have a negative impact on the heart.

Almost 50% of people having Type 2 diabetes get affected by dyslipidemia. In this problem, the level of triglycerides increase, HDL decreases and the LDL particles increases.

Experts believe that the best treatment is adult treatment panel III approach. In this method, the level of LDL cholesterol is reduced. For more effective and long term effect, a person should follow a proper schedule like doing physical activities.

What to do

According to National Cholesterol Education Program, people above the age of twenty years should get tested for baseline lipoprotein profile every five years. To reduce the level of triglycerides, one should consume food which is rich in Omega 3, soya protein also helps in reducing the level of LDL, triglycerides and increases the level of HDL.

There are some changes that you can do in your lifestyle if you have the LDL cholesterol level high -

  • Reducing the consumption of fats like oil, ghee
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Regular walk and exercise
  • Reducing stress level
