Hello everyone I hope you all are doing well. Welcome to another blog.
Sometimes when we wake up in the morning and look in the mirror, we find that the face looks puffy or swollen. It can be due to water retention which means excessive water is accumulated in the body. It can be due to seasonal allergy, infection, side effects of medicine, lifestyle etc. Let us understand the lifestyle related factors -

  • Sleep deprivation or excessive sleep- Not having enough sleep or sleeping too much can cause the liquid present in the body to get accumulated at one place and it can cause puffiness. Using pillow in wrong way can also cause the problem.
  •  Sleeping without removing makeup - After coming home late at night, sometimes we feel too tired to remove our makeup and sleep as such. It sometimes causes contact dermatitis which is a type of skin reaction. Due to this, redness of eyes, itching and swelling occurs. Most of the cases are not serious but when eyes are swollen and you find it difficult to open them, you should consult to a doctor. So try to remove makeup before sleeping.

Effect of food and drugs- Bad eating habits can also be a cause like if you are consuming excessive salt containing products such as chips and junk food then the water gets accumulated in the tissue and the face may look puffy in morning. Consumption of excessive alcohol causes the person to urinate more than usual and it may cause little dehydration. In this case, the body tries to maintain the normal water level of the body and puffiness can occur at face and other parts.

Ways to prevent-  It is not always possible to stop this problem but there are some preventive measures that can be taken.

  •  Try not to consume excess amount of salt especially at night.
  • Include fiber containing products such as alsi, almonds, pomegranate, sprouts etc.
  • Do not consume refined carbohydrates like multipurpose flour, sugar, cake, donuts, white bread regularly.
  • Try to avoid eating at late night and do not sleep just after having your meal.
  • Drink enough amount of water to keep yourself hydrated.
  • Try to avoid alcoholic beverages.
If the problem still occurs, consult to a specialist without wasting time.
