Hi everyone,

I am back another movie review. My neighbour totoro is different from other movies I have reviewed till now. Usually I review fantasy romantic movies but this one is more of a children fantasy movie. It was released in 1988 animated by studio Ghibli.

Plot- 

The story's timeline is 1950s. A university professor, Tatsuo Kusakabe with his two daughters, Satsuki and Mei, moves into an old house in a village. They moved into this house to be close to the girls mother as who is recovering from a long term illness and rarely is able to meet her daughters. Small creatures called susuwatari are inhabited in that house. When the girls got comfortable in their new home, these soot spirits left their house to find a new place .

One day while Satsuki was in school and their dad was working , mei found two small spirits who took her to a hollow of a large tree. She meets a larger spirit. Which can only roar . When she asked him his name , he roared to which she interpreted ‘Totoro’. She fell asleep on totoro but when Satsuki found her she was laying on the ground. Mei tries to take her family to totoro but was unable to find the path. Satsuki comforts her by saying that totoro will find when he wants to reveal himself.

One night it was raining heavily, the girls thought of of receiving their father at the bus stop. The bus was late so mei fell asleep on Satsuki's back and suddenly totoro appears beside them. Totoro has only a leaf on his head to protect him from the rain so satsuki gave him an umbrella that she brought for her father. Totoro was happy and thankful. To return her the favour, he gave her a bundle of nuts and seeds. A giant cat shaped bus appears and stops in front of them. Totoro boards it and leaves. After sometime their dad's bus arrives.

The girls planted the seeds in their garden. A few days later they woke up at midnight and found totoro and other tiny spirits doing a ceremonial dance around the seeds. The girls joined them and the seed started to grow into a huge tree. Totoro asks the girls to climb on his back for a ride on a magical flying top. The next day the tree was not there but the seeds were sprouted.

After few days the girls found out that their plan to visit their mother was postponed because of a setback in her treatment. Mei did not took it well and got mad at satsuki. She left for the hospital to bring fresh corn to her mother. Due to her disappearance satsuki got worried. She And the Neighbours started to search for her. In desperation, satsuki returns to the tree where mei met totoro and ask him for help. Happy to help, totoro summons the cat bus which carried her to the lost mei. The bus then took them to the countryside to see their mother in the hospital. The girls overhear a conversation between their parents and found out that she has been kept in  hospital by a minor cold but otherwise is good. They secretly leave the ear of corn on the window and returned home.

After sometime mei and satsuki's mother returned home and sisters played with other children while totoro and tiny spirits saw them from afar.

Review- 

Being a 1988 movie, the animation was way ahead of time. I usually like SciFi or romantic anime movies and maybe that is the reason why I didn't find it that intersting . In comparison to other movies I have reviewed I would give it 5/10. But again different people have different tastes and opinions . So I think you should watch it once in spare time.
