Svalbard is a group of islands situated between the Arctic Ocean, Barents Sea, Greenland Sea, and Norwegian Sea (Russian: иерен, Shpitsbergen or румaнт, Grumant). The region is occasionally known as Spitsbergen, the major island where all the towns are located. The islands have been governed by Norway since 1920 and are located directly to the north of Norway. The communities of Svalbard are, after the Canadian military installation at Alert, the two most northerly permanently inhabited locations on the world.

Outside of a few small communities, there is essentially little infrastructure. Glaciers comprise over 60% of the region, granite formations make up 30%, and there are barely 10% of trees.

The Norwegian government's statement does give some instances of recent modifications. A "kommunedirektr" (municipal director) has replaced a "rdmann" (council member). A "helsesykepleier" (health nurse) has replaced a "helsesster" (health sister). The term "kontordame" (office lady) has been replaced with "sekretaer" (secretary), yet it's important to note that in countries like the U.S., the allegedly sexist "secretary" title has been changed to "administrative assistant."
