Karnataka, The History Of Badami Also Known As Badami Chalukyas

Badami, formerly known as Vatapi, is a town and headquarters of a taluk by the same name, in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, India It was the regal capital of the badami chalukyas from CE 540 to 757. It is famous for its rock structure temple. It is located in a ravine at the foot of a rugged, red sandstone outcrop that surrounds Agastya lake. Badami has been selected as one of the heritage cities for HRIDAY 

The badami chalukyas also called the early chalukyas ruled from badami Karnataka in the period of 543 - 753 CE and spawned the vesara style called Badami Chalukyas Architecture. The finest examples of there art are seen in Pattadakal, Aihole and Badami in northern Karnataka. Over 150 temple remain in the Malaprabha basin.

The most enduring legacy of the Chalukya dynasty is the architecture and that art they left behind.

More than hundred and fifty monoments attributed to the Badami Chalukyas.

And bulit between 450 and 700, remain in the Malaprabha basin in Karnataka.

The rock-cut temples of pattadakal, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Badami, Aihole and Mahakuta are theri most celebrated monuments.

Two of the famous paintings at Ajanta cave no 1, The temptation of the Buddha and the persian embassy are the attributed to them.

This is the beginning of Chalukyas style of architecture and a consolidation of South Indian style.

In Aihole known as the cradle of Indian architecture there are over 150 temples scattered around the village.

The Lard Khan Temple is the oldest. The durga temple is notable for its semicircular apse, elevated plinth and the gallary that encircles the sanctum

The Ravalphadi cave temple celebrate the many forms of Shiva.

Others temples including konthi temple complex and the meguti jain temple.

Pattadakalu is a World Heritage Site. Where one finds the virupaksha temple; it is the biggest temple having curved scenes from the great epics of the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Others temple at pattadakal are Mallikarjuna, Kashivishwanath, Galaganatha and Papanath.

The Gadag style of architecture is also called Western Chalukyas Architecture.

This style originated during the period of the Kalyani Chalukyas (also known as western Chalukyas)

The doddabasappa at dambal and the Amriteshwara temple at Annigeri. Which is marked by ornate pillars with intricate sculpture.
