The death toll in the Malappuram boat capsize incident rose to 22 on Monday, the Regional Fire Range Officer said. The incident was reported in Malappuram district of Kerala, where a tourist boat sank close to the Tanur coast. 'We've recovered 22 bodies from the fire range so far,' said Regional Fire Officer Shiju KK. The exact number of people on board is unknown, so we're continuing the search to find out if there are other victims trapped in the mud or not."
A number of vehicles have arrived at the scene, and are about to commence a rescue operation. In addition, Kerala Health Minister Virutha George convened an emergency meeting for the state health department at midnight after the incident and instructed officials to be more efficient in treating injured people. Improved care for the wounded and faster postmortem procedures were ordered by the Minister of Health. The Minister also ordered that a postmortem be initiated at 6:00 in the morning on Monday.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday condoled the loss of lives in the Malappuram boat capsize incident and ordered the effective coordination of rescue operations. "Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the Tanur boat accident in Malappuram. He ordered that rescue operations, which are under the responsibility of cabinet ministers, be coordinated effectively within the district administration. I'm deeply sorry to hear about the grief families and friends," said CM Pinarayi Vijayan on Twitter.
According to Nazar, at least 10 passengers have been treated in different hospitals. Four people were taken there in a critical condition, the PTI news agency quoted Abdurahiman as saying. Many of those on board weren't wearing lifejackets, survivors told local media. According to the news agency, PTI, a government statement said that Monday is an official day of mourning.
The Minister of Tourism in Kerala Mohammed Riyas was on his way to Thanoor from Kozhikode, sources said. Aid to rescue efforts is provided by the Fire and Police departments, local officials as well as a few boatmen. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing, with a possibility to continue for some time. Efforts are being made to land the capsized boat on shore.
The police told the news agency that ten patients have been admitted to nearby hospitals, some of them in critical condition. President Droupadi Murmu said that she was “deeply saddened by the tragic boat accident in Kerala. “I offer my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured," she said.
