"Violent Torture Porn" by Saani Kaayidham. Yes, of course, we see men and women go on a slaughter, leaving trails of decapitated heads, dismembered bodies, severed body parts, and crunchy bodies.
And yes, Arun keeps the camera firmly on the scene as the main characters torment their rivals and watch them suffer and bring them the most painful death. It makes you want to look away from the screen Maybe, but I worry that looking away won't quite capture the depth of the hero's desperation that has turned him into a ruthless killing machine.
The structure of Sani Khaidam, which seems to mean pulp paper, is very simple. Factory workers are trying to escape poverty and improve their lives by trying to vote in elections. Intoxicated with arrogance and fueled by senseless prejudices and caste pride, the mill owner humiliates him. The man in question reacts, arousing the fanatics. So what is the ultimate humiliation that can be inflicted on a man? He decides to rape and beat his wife, Pony (Keerthy Suresh).
Ponni is a hardworking woman with no big dreams. All she wants is to feed her daughter Dunham three decent meals a day and save enough money for her education. She has no skin on the toxic game of masculinity.
One of Pony's rapists told an accomplice, "I'm sure this is her house. It's almost as if Pony's husband has these guys to hasten their desire to commit heinous crimes." An excuse they could use to justify their hateful behavior, something they probably would have done anyway...but now they have their own twisted morals. In a sense, they have pretexts to act on dysfunctional desires and wills.
Pony was beaten, humiliated and abused by four men who locked her husband and daughter in their own house and set it on fire. The scene lasts longer than expected. But the crime is shown from the victim's point of view, capturing the sickening ugliness of these men's actions. It's repulsive and unsettling. Arun knows it's important to convey the inhumanity of her crimes to her viewers so they don't hate them when Pony's perpetrators are inhumanly slaughtered.
Violence, torture, death, and many fatalities form the core experience of Arun's films. It's not something you're used to in Tamil cinema, but you might take pleasure in seeing the original truth that gives Arun's characters superhuman abilities of brutality and violence.
