"I Will Do It Later & That Later Means Never"

Many a times in our life we came across situations in which we keep on postponing our works for future. We keep on planning & making ourselves believe that we are definitely going to do that work later. But the result is ‘zero’ again. We again find excuses & this cycle keeps on repeating itself and at last we ends up in doing nothing & tonns of regrets.

I know many of you who are reading this post can relate themselves with this. It's so frustrating when you want to do something but you just can not. I will discuss some hacks to avoid this situation. Hello family I am Vibhu and welcome to my blog about ‘Self-Improvement’.

Why do we postpone our works?

See there are many explanations about this but not going into much of technicalities let me tell you in simple language that the habit of postponing works doesn't build overnight. It is actually a long term process that builds in you over time.

When you keep on doing this over and over again your mind adjusts itself with the fact that some or the other works need to be postponed for future & this makes you feel better at that moment by triggering some neurosensetive areas of your brain. So in this way the habit of postpoing works become our lifestyle and the works which need to be done actually is done only in memories & you feel tied up with it.

Consequences :

We all know that pushing our works for future creates unnecessary burden on us. But if it exceedes over its limit it can cause great damage to our well being, life style & our future as well. How? Let me summarise this for you :

  • Pushing or postponing our works for future makes us believe in the ‘Art of Escaping’ & we start doing this with everything and any situation which is not good for mental health.
  • Postponing works for future gives us ‘Short term pleasure’ but soon when the work again arrives we feel frustrated & keep on going again and again in past thinking about doing the work then.
  • ‘I will do it later’ attitude also makes us irresponsible about our duties towards family, self & nation. We apply this excuse and feel better even if doing this may result in great harm on ourselves, relationships & country as well.
  • Whenever we do something what we like, our brain releases a chemical called ‘Dopamine’ also called chemical of satisfaction. So, when we feel satisfied by postponing our works it releases again and again. It's over release causes a condition called ‘Brain-freeze’ where we start escaping important & our day to day works as well.

How to deal with it?

See first of all we have to make a habit of not postponing or shifting our important works for future again and again from the very beginning. It can work for a few times when you really need it but not always. We/You have to build this habit of doing works on their specific times.

Here I am listing some tried & tested methods that can help you if you too keep on postponing your works :

  1. First of all fix a time table just for your waking up and sleep timings and follow it strictly. It will provide you equal time on daily basis so that inequality won't exist and you can't say to yourself that you have less time this day or that day. This will also keep you motivated.
  2. Prioritise your works either a day before or on the day in morning. Write them in serial order with priority to them. And also create a check list for them. Do most important ones first so that you won't have to regret.
  3. Keep a ‘Safe Break Period’ twice a week for those tasks which you haven't completed due to any genuine obstruction on the actual day so that you already have the time to do them later & won't waste your next day doing previous works.
  4. Give yourself a little gift or something after completing any work on the given day or time. You can make a chart of your work done on time and can monitor your progress.
  5. Do practise Meditation atleast twice a day or once a day minimum. This will keep your mind healthy and keep you always from procrastinating and postponing your works.

Remember :

When you know that you have to do some work and it's important, do them on time otherwise you would end up making a pile of works in future.

This is it for this post. I hope this post managed to add some values in your life or have made you realise something that you are missing or not doing.
