See, Being a student of Science I can give you a technically correct and engaging definition but it won't make you exactly understand about emotions from a practical point of view. So in easy language emotions are just the reactions of any kind of change in your surrounding (called stimulus).
Even at microscopic level in our body such actions and reactions are going on. But they are not called emotions. Although when reactions are mixed with any psychological or behavioural impact they are called emotions.
Whatever response you generate against any stimulus is categorised under emotion whether big or small. Also according to Hindu/Sanatan scriptures it has already been advised not to get over involved in these emotions if you want to achieve something what others only crave about.
Reffering to Hindu/Sanatan scriptures these emotions are broadly classified into five main categories as :
Emotions have the direct connection with your psychology therefore if something pushes you up or down your psychology also works according to it. But simultaneously your physical state, behavioural & intelligence parts also suffers as psychology is the basis of their existence. Let me give you two of the situational examples and make you understand how :
Today was your result day of class 1oth & you scored 96% & it was so exciting for you that you thought classes 11th & 12th would also go like this. Now you started skipping regularity & kept on ignoring things in overconfidence & ego. Eventually you failed or got lesser marks in further classes leading to sadness, regrets & feeling of “I could have done or not done this” etc & these in turn may lead to effects on your further studies, career, health & wealth as well if not controlled within limits.
As as situation only , If it was the hardest time, either you lost someone or your partner broke up with you. Now, as you were emotionally so much invested in them for a long time, now you couldn't hold yourself. You started ignoring other available things, other relationships & works. Now gradually it will create a mental/psychological pressure on you as you can not ignore them at all. And they too will create some physical, economical & behavioural impact on you.
I am nowhere saying to become emotionless. Because we humans are made that way. It is our emotions which separates us from rest of the animal kingdom. It makes us unique, supreme & different species.
I am just suggesting to have a proper control over your emotions. You must know whatever things you are doing & why you are doing.
“Being Emotional is worth but excess emotions or uncontrolled emotions are always worthless”.
So, Control your emotions before it's too late for you.
