In Paraguay, Joyce Hall initially proposed Friendship Day in 1958. It was a festival in which friendships were honoured with a worldwide celebration. Due to desynchronization in the United States, the original Date of Celebration was set for 2 August, but it has subsequently been changed to 7 August.

Nane Annan, the spouse of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, designated Winnie the Pooh as the global ambassador of friendship at the UN in 1998 to celebrate Friendship Day. The United Nations co-sponsored the event. the Department of Public Information, Disney Enterprises, and Kathy Lee Gifford served as co-hosts .[3]

Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho first suggested the idea of a Global Friendship Day on July 20, 1958, at a dinner with friends in Puerto Pinasco, a village on the River Paraguay about 200 miles north of Asuncion, Paraguay .[4]
