It has been believed that rice water, the water left over after rice is cooked, has the effect of making hair strong and beautiful. It was first used in Japan over 1000 years ago.

Rice water is also gaining popularity as a skin treatment. It is said to soothe, tone and improve a variety of skin conditions. Even more appealing is rice water, which is easy and cheap to make at home. In short, yes rice water is good for your skin and face.

Rice water contains substances proven to protect and repair skin. Let's take a closer look at the benefits of rice water for skin.

Rice water Benefits for Skin

Skin Brightening Effect

This benefit of rice water has not been scientifically proven. However, people in Korea and Japan use rice water to minimize blemishes and brighten their skin. It is Speculated that rice water contains enzymes that lighten the skin. As such, it is often used as an active ingredient in saops and creams.

Protects the Skin Barrier

When the skin's natural barrier function declines, it becomes more prone to dryness and skin problems such as topic dermatitis. Studies show that rice starch helps improve and repair the skin's natural barrier, which is especially beneficial for those with atopic dermatitis. This characteristic of rice water also helps treat eczema, rashes and inflammation.

Other Uses of Rice Water

Rice water can be applied directly to the skin and hair. You can customize it by adding fragrances and other natural ingredients. When boiling or fermenting, dilute with water first.

Cleanser and Toner for Face

As a facial tonic, dab a small amount of rice water onto a cotton ball and gently rub over face and neck. Cleasing as if massaging the skin. Rinse if necessary. You can also make a face mask using thick tissue paper.

For Bath Soak

Grate a small amount of natural soap and add it that water along with the Vitamin E for a soothing soak.

As Sunscreen

Sunscreens with rice bran extracts and other botanical extracts provided better UVA/UVB protection.

How to Make a Rice Water?

There are different types of rice water there:

  1. Boiling 
  2. Soaking 
  3. Fermented 

Boiling Rice Water

Wash well and drain. Use four times as much as water as rice. Combine rice and water and bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Squeeze the rice with a spoon to release the beneficial chemicals, strain the rice through a sieve, and store the water in an airtight container for up to a week. Dilute with fresh water before use.

Soaking Rice Water

It can also be made by soaking in water. Follow the same steps as before, but instead of boiling the rice and water, let it soak for atleast 30 minutes before squeezing and straining. Finally, let it cool.

Fermented Rice Water

The process of making this water is the same as soaking rice in water. After pressing and straining the rice, instead of refrigerated the water, let it sit at room temperature for a day or two. When it start to smell sour, put the container in the refrigerated. Dilute with fresh water before use.
