Long walk to freedom, Mandela speaks about the historic occasion, “ The Inaugation” Can you guess what the occasion might be?
Nelson Mandela has become South Africa's first black president after more than three centuries of the white rule, Mr. Mandela's South African National Congress party won 252 out of 400 seats in the first democratic elections of South Africa's history.
The inaugaration ceremony took place in the Union buildings Amphitheatre in pretoria, attended by politicians and digniaries from more than 140 countries around the world “ Never, never will this beautiful land experience the oppression of one another” said Nelson Mandela in his address.
Jubilant scenes on the streets of pretoria followed the ceremony with the blacks, whites and coloureds celebrating together, more than one lakh South African men, woman and children of all races sang and danced with joy.
On that day he was accompanied by his daughter, Zenani. On the podium, Mr de Klerk was first sworn in as the second deputy president and then Thabo Mbeki was sworn in as the first deputy president
After a few moments of his speech, all lifted their eyes in awe as a spectacular array of south African jets, helicopters and troop carruers roared in the perfect formation oved the Union buildings. Only moments before, the highest generals of the South African defence force and police, their chests bedecked with ribbons and medals from days gone by, saluted me and pledged their loyalty. He was not unmindful of the fact that not as many years before they would not have saluted but arrested him. Finally, a chevron of Impala jets left smoke trial of the black, red, green, blue and gold of tge new South African flag. The day was symbolised for me by playing of our two National Anthems, and the vision of whites singing," Nkosi Sikelel- iafrika" and blacks singing, “ die stream”.
On the day of the inaugaration, he was overwhelmed with the sense of the history. In the first decade of the twentieth century, a few years after the bitter Anglo-Boer war and before his own birth, the white skinned people of south Africa patchedup their own differences and erected a system od racial domination againist the dark sinned people of their own land. The structure they create formed the basis of one of the hardest, most inhumane, societies the world has ever knowm. Now, in the last decade of the twentieth century, and my own eighth decade as a man, that system had been overtuned and replaced by one that recognised the rights and freedom of all people regardless of the colour of the skin.
He knew that the oppressor must be liberated just as surely as the oppressed. A man who takes away another man's freedom is a prisoner of hatred, he is locked behind the bars of prejudice and narrow mindedness . He is not truely free if he is taking away someone else's freedom, just as surely as he is not free when his freedom is taken from him. The oppressed and the oppressor a like are robbed of their humanity.
Not only this, we'll have even more to know about this strived man, not only him many have worked hard to gain freedom of different kinds, Salute and Respect to all of them.
