VOODOO:

Voodoo and contemporary black magic have been linked in popular culture and fiction. Hexing or cursing may be recognised as forms of black magic, but Voodoo has its own unique history and rituals.

Black magic and white magic are categorised differently in the Voodoo tradition, with sorcerers like the Bokor recognised for utilising both types of magic in their ceremonies. But because of their propensity for using spells that conjure forth curses, poisons, and zombies, they—and Voodoo in general—are frequently linked to black magic in particular.

Common Culture:

Black magic concepts and descriptions are frequently seen in literature, movies, and other forms of popular culture. Examples comprise:

Dennis Wheatley's 1934 novel The Devil Rides Out was adapted into a well-known movie by Hammer Studios in 1968.
Black magic is a key element in the horror book Rosemary's Baby from 1968.
The Craft is a 1996 horror movie about four friends who engage in white witchcraft but later do black magic rituals for selfish reasons.
Black magic spells and curses are referred to as "the dark arts" in the Harry Potter book series (1997–2007), which teaches students how to defend themselves. produced as a television series (2001–2011).

The first of Guy Ritchie's three Sherlock Holmes films, Sherlock Holmes (2009), has aspects of black magic, however they are eventually revealed to be untrue.

Russian official media stated that Ukraine was utilising black magic to repel the Russian troops during the 2022 invasion of that country, notably accusing Oleksiy Arestovych of enlisting witches and sorcerers as well as Ukrainian soldiers of consecrating "weapons with blood magick."

The seven Artes prohibitae of black magic:

According to Johannes Hartlieb's definition of the seven artes prohibitae or artes magicae, which were forbidden by canon law and were divided into seven categories to correspond with the artes liberales and artes mechanicae, in 1456:

necromancy
geomancy
hydromancy
aeromancy
pyromancy
chiromancy scapulimancy
It is somewhat arbitrary how the four "elemental" disciplines—geomancy, hydromancy, aeromancy, and pyromancy—are divided. Scapulimancy is the divination from animal bones, particularly shoulder blades, and is practised in peasant superstition. Chiromancy is the divination from a subject's palms as practised by the Romani (at the time freshly arrived in Europe). As intellectual "high magic" originated from High Mediaeval grimoires like the Picatrix or the Liber Rasielis, nigromancy stands in opposition to this.

The execution of every witch "convicted by the Magistrate" is required. He makes no exceptions, and "all Diviners, Charmers, Jugglers, all Wizards, commonly called wise men or wise women" are subject to this judgement. The harsh sentence should be applied to all allegedly “good Witches who do no harm but good, who do not spoil and destroy but save and deliver.”
