I wish i knew this at early stage of my career.
1. Personal branding.
You can start building your brand by involving yourself in every vertical within your organization to showcase your work. one of the simplest ways to do this is by sharing your knowledge with others one can also do the same outside work as well. Linkedin is a wonderful platform for building your personal brand. Once people know your work the opportunities will be endless. Helping people grow of the same niche is the best way to build your brand just remember that. It took me nearly 20years of my career to realize that.
2.Networking
This can be done internally within your organization through initiatives, new projects, meetings collaboration with people from the same industries. Most of the opportunities come through the network. Its pretty simple people should know you for your work not just your name. Once you build such brand for yourself you will always stay relevant with the industry.
3. Micro niche.
Micro niche is nothing but finding that one thing that you are very good at and focus on the same and get better at it everyday. It takes approximately 10,000 hours to master a skill that can be your brand value. The earlier you start the better. I realized it at a very later stage of my career.
There are 6rules you should follow for better career planning.
1. Put learning over earning.
I would say the first 5years of your career should be more towards up skilling yourself to stand out of the crowd and take big responsibilities and keep solving problems. Learning is an endless process the point is you will learn better if you start doing it at a early stage of your career.
2. Find where you stand.
Are you being paid more then your skill this is a very important self analysis you must do the best way to do that is attending various interviews in your market so you know where you stand in the crowd.
3. Take risks.
Try new things fail and fail better this is the best way of learning new things especially when you fail and learn from it you will learn better. I did that by switching jobs and industries until I found what am good at it is absolutely normal if you switch jobs and industries until you find yourself being good at one thing.
4. Networking to give.
Helping people by giving what you know, connecting people to be beneficial. Helping people find jobs and opportunities is a great way to do that.
5. Take initiatives.
Picking initiatives, projects, volunteering, helping both the organization & my colleagues. I still do free counselling and guest speaking in some of the events for a good cause this is a great way of showing your generosity to people in your network.
6. Forever up skilling.
Pursuing both formal and informal career is a mundane in todays digital era. This is through your training, certificates, educating consistently through various training programs.
