In the past, women faced many challenges that stifled their growth and freedom. They lived in an orthodox and conventional environment where their roles were strictly confined to household duties. Female foeticide was rampant, and the birth of a girl child was often considered a burden. The rights and freedoms women enjoy today result from relentless struggles and sacrifices made by countless women before them. While we have made significant strides in combating female foeticide and promoting gender equality, the battle is far from over.
One might think that by merely preventing the killing of girl children and allowing women to work alongside men, we have achieved true equality. However, this perspective is deeply flawed. True equality is not just about providing opportunities but also about respecting women in every aspect of life.
Consider the scenario of a woman who waits for her husband to come home for dinner. No matter how late it gets, she waits, ensuring that the family eats together. But often, the husband returns home having already eaten, without informing his wife and children. This small act of inconsideration speaks volumes about the lack of respect and communication in many households.
Moreover, the lack of respect extends beyond mealtimes. In many families, men still feel entitled to mock or criticize their wives in front of relatives and guests, forgetting that respect is a fundamental part of any relationship. These men may never raise their voices or hands, believing themselves to be good husbands because they provide financially. However, their emotional neglect and lack of support tell a different story.
A man who is willing to take days off work to help neighbors and relatives but never finds time to fix things at home exemplifies this neglect. He might think that not beating or yelling at his wife, and giving her money on time, makes him a good husband. Yet, his continuous use of the phone during family time and ignoring the emotional needs of his wife and children can cause deep emotional pain and sadness.
Therefore, it's crucial to understand that ending female foeticide and promoting women’s empowerment are just the beginning. True respect for women involves recognizing their contributions, valuing their time, and supporting them emotionally and physically. Only when we address these aspects can we claim to have achieved genuine equality and make the world a better place for girls and women.
We must continue to challenge and change societal norms, ensuring that respect and equality are ingrained in our daily lives, not just in our laws.
