AIR VEIW OF THE SITE HARAPPA

an analysis of fat residue in ancient ceramic vessels from settlements of the Indus valley civilization in present day Haryana and Uttar Pradesh suggests that the prehistoric people of the time consumed meat of the animals like cattle, buffalo, sheep , pigs etc.…

the study published in the JOURNAL OF ARCHAELOGICAL SCIENCE , involved the extraction and identification of fats and oils that have been absorbed into ancient ceramic vessels during there use in the past.

the Harappans ate a wide range of plants and animal products , including fish. Archaeologists have been able to reconstruct dietary practices from finds of charred grains and seeds . These are studied by archaeo -botanists , who are specialist in ancient plant remains .

Grains found at Harappan sites include wheat, barley , lentil, chickpea, and sesame , millets were found in parts of Gujrat . Finds of rice are relatively rare .

Animal bones found at Harappan sites include those of cattle, sheep, goat, buffalo, and pig . Studies done by archaeo - zoologists indicate that these animals were domesticated .Bones of wild species such as bore , deer, and gharial are also found .

SURYANARAYAN , who is the current postdoctoral researcher at CNRS  , France , said her team found a predominance of non- ruminant animal fats in the vessel - even though the remains of animal like pigs were not present in large quantities .

“ it is possible that plant products or mixture of plant and animal products were also used in vessels , creating ambiguous results ” , she added.

Despite the high percentage of the remains of domestic ruminant of animals  found archaeologist say there is limited direct evidence that the civilization used dairy products .

the Harappa civilization is the oldest civilization to be known and many secrets are yet to be revealed
