My blog is all about food and lifestyle. Today I’m going to take your through how food and our mental health is connected. Whether you are a junkie or a healthy eater, what we all have in common is FOOD. There are many factors for food like time, weather, occasion, etc.

Its very fascinating to think how our gut and brain are connected at a deeper level.  Eating is not only for our physical health but also for our mental health. We must all follow mindful eating. Everything in our life is controlled by our brain like thoughts, emotions, breathing, heartbeat, senses, etc What we eat in a day results with how we interact with people or how we carry ourselves everyday. Sitting with friends or family improves our connection. Eating a nutrient rich diet helps our brain communicate better. One can start by analysing which food makes you feel good and which food makes you feel worse. When you eat a lot of processed food, sugar, etc inflammation and oxidative stress takes place in your body. When you eat high quality food like filled with vitamins and minerals, it helps the brain from free radicals and makes you feel good about yourself. A diet that is high in refined sugar impairs brain function or even depression could occur. Most of your serotonin is produced in your gut, this in turn is influenced by good bacteria in our micro biome, so what food you eat guides our emotion. The good bacteria provides a barrier against bad bacteria and prevents inflammation. They also help in observing the nutrients more. Based on books, Mediterranean diet is better cause it’s mostly of fruits and vegetables, low glycemic index carbs, fat and protein. Fat also it’s mostly of poly unsaturated fatty acid and mono unsaturated fatty acid. Very minimal amount of saturated fat is included. It’s time we start seeing food from different angles. Learning about food helps with your choice of food for the day. It’s never too late to change your diet. Try avoiding all junk foods for two to three weeks and observe how you feel. It is not only good for our body but also good for our mind.
I started to avoid all junk foods and replaced them with healthy meal and snacks. It really does change your mood. Let us all start eating in a holistic way.
