Euthanasia - Perspective Through An Indian Eye

While talking about the concept of Euthanasia in India, it seems to become more of a spiritual issue than a medical one. In the country, it isn't just seen as the end to one suffering but as mercy killing. The concept of Euthanasia has strictly considered illegal in the eye of the law and the individual's family or the doctors performing it could face some serious allegations and penalties.

The individuals wanting to perform the practice of Euthnaisa are often referred to as “Death Seeking Visitors” but it also is questionable on what basis does the law or the government decides as a country we promote the “Right to live with dignity” but not the “Right to Die”.

In my opinion, in today's era where a human being is the most advanced creature in the entire evolution and has created wonders that we could only imagine of can at least decide for him/herself if they just want to end their painful sufferings to die in peace and harmony.

To have to commit suicide and to involve in the practice of Euthnansis is two entirely different theories. In the latter option, the individual/herself doesn't choose to get hurt or have life-threatening scars, it's inevitable.

Throwing light to the case of Aruna Shanbaug, who died in the year  2015, after being in a vegetative state or bedridden for as long as 42 years.

In the year 1973, while Aruna was working as a hospital nurse she was assaulted and raped by one of the ward boys which left her such distortions scars that she spent her entire life confined to the bed. the most upsetting truth of the case is that - Her rapist, Valmiki was not charged for rape and just given 7 year-long prisons for theft and attempted murder and while Aruna was continually denied the option of euthanasia even after several requests made by her family and doctor.

Now, I just want you all to take a moment and think out of the two which is a bigger crime? Because I just can't decide!

After the death of Aruna Shanbaug, the Indian laws, however, opened gates to passive euthanasia in the country, where the life-supporting systems are withdrawn for the patient with no hopes of recovery and end their lives with more suffering in it.

Whether to die without having to suffer and with one's will or to wait till death comes and takes one away is supposedly an individual choice, no government or law can administer it on one's behalf. In a country like India, where spirituality and faith in God play major factors it would take time to sink in the most advanced and practical way to end one's suffering.
