Going aboard for higher studies has become a dream for every youngster in India, of course, standard of academic education, better lifestyle and great job opportunities making them enthusiastic towards going foreign countries and Punjab is only state in North India where youth is completely mad about fulfilling this dream.
Entering into Punjab, hoarding and billboards of IELTS, PTE, TOFEL coaching centers can be seen at every bus stands, markets and even at any public places. These institutes assure the students to get them appropriate band score and finally taking them oversea.
How this craze of foreign among Punjabis begin?
Well, in early 1950s Punjabis started migrated to England to collect bread and butter for their families and return Punjab. This first wave of migrants from Punjab was illiterate or semi-literate. However, second generation worked in England in extremely hard condition such as bad weather and worked in open furnaces and in the mines because wages in these two field were better still they stuck over there started educating their children and making attempts to assimilate with the local people there. Then, third generation onwards made it clear that they were no longer interested in returning to Punjab.
In these days, even large number of rural youth is ready to pay huge amount of money to travelling agents to achieve visa for western countries. It is clear that Punjab is fast losing its youth to this lure of migration.
Now the question arises is why this state besotted by foreign shores?
There are ample of reason behind this scenario which have to be discussed.
Firstly, they can afford to go and there is a good support network in the country where they want to go since someone is already there from the family or friends. Their perception that going aboard will definitely make their next generation secure is letting them invest such a huge amount. Not only unskilled persons are headed aboard but also professional doctors, engineers and other well educated people also nurture foreign dreams.
Next, lifestyle of the person who returns like wearing expensive attire and owned luxurious cars making others allure towards going oversea.
The prominent reason is unemployment in the state is a driving factor for youth looking towards foreign countries is what natives think. The residing people in this state also slammed Punjab government for being oblivious to this issue. If the government improve education standards, making youth skilled and creating backward and forward linkages so that young generation of Punjab can get ample of opportunities here.
All these issues driving Punjabis out of country and ironically many times they are exploited by fraud travel agents who push them to dangerous routes to go foreign counties.
