Recently I watched the Hindi Bollywood movie ‘Saina’. It is an biography about the famous badminton player Saina Nehwal. The movie stars Parineeti Chopra as Saina Nehwal in the lead role. It also has Manav Kaul, Eshaan Naqvi, and Meghna Malik as the supporting cast. It is based on the life of the famous badminton player Saina Nehwal, who is the ONLY Indian athlete (male and female) to have 14 individual titles to her name. The movie is directed by Amole Gupte.
The movie about her journey. How she became world famous, her ups, her downs, her mistakes, her sacrifices. But it is so much more than that. It is about the journey of her family. How they supported her and shaped her mindset. It is about the journey of her friends, of her lover and their belief in her.
The movie starts with Saina winning the championship that gave her the title and position of World's No. 1 Badminton Player. The rest of the movie is sort of in a flashback, talking about how she reached there. The seed of badminton was planted in Saina's heart and mind through her mother. Her mom was also a Badminton player and it was her perseverance and dedication that pushed Saina to become a fearless player.
While the trailer did not raise too many expectations but the movie turned out to be surprisingly good. It was a simple, sweet and wonderful watch; and a perfect movie to watch with your family. My parents loved watching it.
Talking about the performances, Saina Nehwal's character was portrayed perfectly by Parineeti Chopra. Parineeti did not try to mimic Saina, but very beautifully blended her body language and overall personality and made the portrayal her own. Thankfully she did not try to be a caricature (Like RK in Sanju) and played the character very naturally. If you compare her role to Saina Nehwal's actual interviews you will actually see how well she has done the role.
It was a very wholesome watch, and my favourite part definitely was how they dealt and showed the fame part of an athlete. We often see how many athletes get famous, sign brand deals, but it also does affect their sport and they showed it really well.
Amole Gupte's direction was pretty perfect, and had his unique touch. Amole Gupte's movies have always had an emotional touch along with lots of fun and a tadka of comedy.
It definitely was a great watch and I enjoyed watching this movie. I would rate the movie 4/10
