Laurie Nunn produced the British comedy-drama television series Sex Education. The season, which stars Asa Butterfield as an anxious adolescent and Gillian Anderson as his mother, a sex therapist, premiered on Netflix on January 11, 2019. Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Aimee Lou Wood, and Kedar Williams-Stirling star alongside Kedar Williams-Stirling. With over 4 million views, it was a critical and financial success for Netflix.
The second season premiered on January 17, 2020, and the show has been renewed for a third season, which will premiere in 2021.
The first series follows Otis Milburn, an awkward adolescent at Moordale Secondary School who is ambivalent about sex, despite the fact that his mother is a sex therapist who is open about all facets of sexuality, or maybe because of it. Otis sets up a sex advice company with Maeve, a confident but depressed classmate, after unwittingly assisting the school bully with his sexual performance anxiety. Otis and Maeve, an optimistic but troubled classmate, start a sex advice company to support their classmates with their sexual issues.
The second season follows Otis, who is confronted with the realities and stresses of a high school romance after eventually securing a friendship with Ola. The arrival of new students who challenge the status quo at Moordale, as well as a chlamydia epidemic that causes students to doubt and struggle with current issues, puts the romance to the test.
Sex Education tends to be set in modern-day Britain, in the fictional village of Moordale, with numerous elements that help to place the show in an ambiguous time and place. While modern technology such as smartphones exists, the show only features a few cars from after the 1990s, with the majority of the cars on display dating from the 1970s to the 1990s. During the finale, police cars can be seen. Older technology, such as CRT televisions and outdated household appliances, are prominently featured in the programme. The Groffs' home is decorated in the traditional 1970s style; Maeve's caravan is decorated in the 1990sā2000s style; and the Milburns' home is decorated in a more contemporary style with a modern, "American-style" refrigerator. Moordale High School has some similarities to secondary schools in the United Kingdom, but it also has a more American feel to it.
The second series has a 97 percent approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 8.33/10 based on 38 reviews. "Sex Education's sophomore season certainly has more going on," the critical consensus says, "but by treating each new topic with care and laughter, it leaves plenty of room for its characters to evolve." The series has a Metacritic score of 82 out of 100, based on reviews.
