Whether you are a Christian or belong to any other religion, you must have heard about Santa Claus, who leaves gifts for well-behaved children and a piece of coal who is being naughtier all year around. But do you know about the evil twin of Santa Claus that beats the children who are ill-mannered and sometimes drags them to hell so he can devour them...Yes, you guessed it right I'm talking about the Krampus.

According to legend Krampus, a mangled, deranged face with bloodshot eyes tops a furry black body. Moreover, he has giant horns in his head with the body of half-goat and half-demon, who comes around every year to punish naughty children. Krampus is considered to be a part of pagan rituals for the winter solstice. Moreover, Krampus is believed to be the son of Hel, the Norse god of the underworld. It is amusing to know that  St. Nichlos and Krampus both said to arrive on the evening of December 5 or 6 (the night of Krampusnacht; Krampus night) and linked together even though Krampus has nothing to do with Christmas. While St. Nicholas rewards nice children by leaving presents behind, Krampus beats the naughty ones with branches and sticks.   However, his horrific look became a problem when in the 12th century, the catholic church attempted to banish him due to his resemblance to the devil. But it failed to stop his popularity among the population as a much-feared and belove holiday force.

Legend of Krampus originally started in Austria and Germany, but the mass media revolution took the Krampus on Big screen and transferred it to the silver screen of the US, which led a large population an opportunity to celebrate this fierce creature. Now many festivities involve Krampus include the Krampuslauf or roughly translate to Krampus run. In this festivity, people dress like the creature, drink alcohol, and parade through streets scaring spectators and sometimes chasing them for fun. This legend loosely tells about a mythical creature Krampus who is not bad but punishes the bad ones. Krampus is the counterpart of Santa Claus. The popularity of this creature has been increasing and many commercial movies based on him which are spine-chilling.

There are many legends, myths, and stories are associated with Krampus, but all the stories overall tell the same thing that he is the punisher, not the demon who just torture for fun. His appearance is made deliberately scary, so elders can frighten the children who are being excessively naughty. Whether he is real or not, no one can tell but, he sure helps adults to manage their children.
