There was a beautiful orchard. It had big mango trees. In summer, the trees bore sweet mangoes. Their smell could be felt from far away. There was a school nearby.
Once some student ran out of the school, soon after the bell rang. The smell of ripe mangoes reached them and invoked their senses. They ran out cheerfully over a path that led to the orchard.
As soon as the children saw the tempting mangoes in the orchard, their mouths began to water. They wanted to taste the mangoes, but they were afraid that they might be caught by the watchman.
The eldest of the children, Tanuj was the leader of the group. He peeped inside they orchard to took for the watchman but the watchman was not seen there. Soon, all the children entered the orchard and wandered in the orchard freely. They plucked and ate as many mangoes as they could and kept some in their bags.
Suddenly, they heard Tanuj shouting, “Run away, the watchman is coming.”
All of them saw the watchman coming towards them. Rohit quickly jumped from the tree and all the children took their heels.
The watchman was moving a stick in his hand and shouting at the top of his voice, “Catch them, catch them.” All the children were running and the watchman was chasing them furiously.
On their way, there was a mud wall. All of the children leaped over it but Nitin could not. He fell down while leaping and a few mangoes fell out of his pocket. The little boy did not want to loose the mangoes. So, he began to pick them quickly. Just then, the watchman came and caught him. Nitin tried hard to get away but the watchman gripped him very tightly. The other children when saw this, went to the watchman to save their friend.
The watchman presented the boys before the owner of the orchard. He explained to the owner, ”These boys came to the orchard to steal mangoes. They destroyed more than they eat. “The owner kept calm. Children were afraid that they would be thrashed by him. They were caught red handed. The owner, was an old man, asked the boys, their names. “Nitin, Tanuj, Priyank, madan, Mohit,” replied the children.
“Do you like mangoes?” asked the owner to the children. All of them replied, “Yes, they are so yummy.” The owner gave them a basket full of mangoes and urged them to call all their friends one day. The next day, all the boys were present before the owner. They all greeted him with great respect. He then put a basket full of mangoes in front of the children and said,” It is for you, my kids. The orchard is yours. Come here daily and eat as many mangoes as you want. Don’t come like thieves.”
The children accepted the mangoes and thanked the owner. The children were very happy to get the permission for coming to the orchard daily.
