In our childhood days many of us tried this type of communication with our buddies. It's a beautiful memory that we have right?
I think that is not the age of knowing the technology behind that technique but we simply used it as fun gaming purpose but the history says that this is the first initial step towards invention of electromagnetic telephones and till now up to smart phones.
yes, this is not an electromagnetic telephones it is just a mechanical acoustic device. The word acoustic means non-electrical. Present technology is completely based on electrical signal transmission along with that decoding and encoding signal all this stuffs are going to perform in between. But, Tin can is completely work on mechanical vibrations and waves.
This invention happened in the year 1667 but the British physicist Polymath Robert Hooke experimented this from 1664 to 1665
Here is the picture of the Tin Can Telephone
Both the end has one can where the thread ends are tied to the bottom of the cans hence the string forms between Cans then speak at one end of can the sound waves are converted into mechanical waves by diaphragm where this is nothing but the bottom of the Can. This waves passes longitudinally towards the another Can along the string by creating the vibration the same vibration at the receiver Can recreates the voice and one can hear the sound transmitted at transmitter Can.
You can think the range of communication using Tin Can. The maximum rage was very limited, may be the range is about approximately 800 meters.
This device sometimes called as "lovers telephone" it get commercialized and marketed well. thing is interesting that there was a market for this product but anyhow this invention leads to many other inventions regarding the different kinds of telephones and mobile phones. But as time passes this kind of telephone manufacturers cannot able to compete with new technological telephones hence it losses its market.
This is now a days in 20th century became more popular, It is used to show as experimental setup for students in school to make understand them the process of sound transmission in the form of mechanical vibration. as we enjoyed with this kind of experiments in our childhood as a part of gaming, if any children are there in your home then make this device for them and show how the sound travels, let them enjoy too.
