Hello everyone 🙂welcome back to my new blog.
THE PANAMA CANAL
Traversing the Isthmus of Panama, the Panama Canal joints the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The Panama Canal was an idea in the making for several centuries but it was not until 1914 ,thanks to the engineering and administrative skills of the USA led team of George Washington Goethals John F Stevens, that the canal became a reality. The canal cost about dollar 387 million dollars to build and was started in 1903 but, amazingly was completed two years ahead of the target date of 1916.
THE CHANNEL TUNNEL
The second longest tunnel in the world, the channel tunnel runs for 50.5 km and connects England with France in just 35 minutes. It's underwater section of 39 km is the world's longest underwater tunnel. The tunnel was opened in May 1994 and operated by Euro Tunnel.
THE NORTH SEA PROTECTION WORKS
If it were not for the north sea protection works ,the Netherlands would have been washed away years ago. One-third of the country lies below sea level and severe flooding had caused immense loss of life and property over the years. The floods were usually due to the collapse of dikes and sea walls. To protect the country against the devastating floods and to make the coastal areas Livable, the north sea production works, an ambitious vast Complex of dams , floodGates ,storm surge barriers ,raised dunes and other structures ,was conceived in 1923 and completed in 1994 . In terms of magnitude, an American trade journal wrote, the north sea project approaches The Great Wall of China…. it is unique expensive and quite unlike any other civil engineering project to be found on this planet.
THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE
The world's second longest suspension bridge is the Golden Gate Bridge. At 1.2 miles long it is one the most eye catching man made wonders ever and was the brainchild of Joseph Baerman strauss. The bridge was completed in 1937 at a cost of $35 million. The bridge links and Francisco with Marin County and is built across the golden gate straight. Painted a bright vermillion known as international Orange ,its colour was chosen to let the bridge blend in with its Naturals surroundings as well as stand out in a fog.
