Thrissur Pooram is an annual Hindu temple festival heald in thrissur, Kerala. Thrissur is situated in the centre of Kerala and is known as the cultural capital of Kerala. Thrissur Pooram is known as the festival of festivals. Thrissur Pooram has a history of 200 years and was started by Shaktan Tampuran, the King of Kochi. It is heald at the Vadakkumnadha temple every year on the Pooram day.Thrissur Pooram is celebrated on Pooram Nakshatra in Medamasa. More precisely on the eve of Utram Nakshatra at midnight in the month of Meda.
The major attractions are Paramekkav and Tiruvambadi temple fairs with parades of elephants, panchavadhya ghoshas, the changing of kudamata on the elephants, and the pre-dawn fireworks. At the time of departure from Thiruvampadi Bhagavathy to the Brahmaswam Mutt, at the arrival at the Mutt with panchavadyam at the Mutt, in the afternoon at Purapurapad of Paramekkav Temple,In connection with it, the important ceremonies are the one-hour long Chempada Mela, Elanjithara Mela, Thekotirakam, Paramekkav and Thiruvampadi sects meeting each other, Kudamatam, small firework display at dusk, Panchavadyam at night, main firework display in the morning, Pagalpooram held the next day, Fireworks after Pagalpooram and Upacharam Chollipirial.
Puram ceremonies are held in the Vadakkumnathan temple in the center of Thrissur and in the Thekinkad Maidan around the temple. Thrissurpur is imagined to be attended by the goddesses of the Thiruvampadi-Paramekkav temples. Although Krishna is the main deity of the Tiruvampadi Temple, the sub-deity Bhagavathy participates in the Pooram.
Although the Thrissur Pooram consists of eight more small Poorams, the main participants, the Thiruvambadi - Paramekkav Devaswams, have certain rights. Only they have right on the way around the North Temple. The fireworks and the change of water in connection with the Pooram are the rights of these two groups only.The main ceremony of Pooram is Elanjithara Mela, Tekothirakam, Kudamatam etc. The stage is set for the Puram celebrations on the main day with the raising of small flowers. At 6:30 in the morning, Kanimangalam, who bows down before Vadakkunnathan, arrives first to participate in the Shastav Pooram. Then one by one the other small Purams are Karamuk Bhagavathy, Churakottukav Bhagavathy, Naithilakat Bhagavathy, Lalur Bhagavathy, Panaykempilly Shastav,The deities of eight temples namely Ayanthol Karthyaani Bhagavathy and Chembukkav Bhagavathy will arrive with Cherupuram.
