In what would become known as the 1st Academy Awards, AMPAS first presented it in 1929 at a private dinner held by Douglas Fairbanks in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. In 1930, the Academy Awards ceremony was transmitted on radio for the first time, and in 1953, it was broadcast on television for the first time. It is the oldest worldwide entertainment awards ceremony and is now televised live worldwide. It is also the oldest of the four major annual American entertainment awards; its equivalents – the Emmy Awards for television, the Tony Awards for theater, and the Grammy Awards for music – are modeled after the Academy Awards.They are widely cited as the most famous and prestigious competitive awards in the field of entertainment.
On May 16, 1929, a private dinner function at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with an audience of around 270 guests hosted the first Academy Awards show.
The Mayfair Hotel hosted the post-awards crowd. The expense of guest seats for the ceremony that night was $5 ($74 in 2020 dollars). Fifteen statuettes were presented, recognising actors, directors, and other film industry members for their contributions between 1927 and 1928. The entire ceremony lasted 15 minutes.
On February 9, 2020, the 92nd Academy Awards ceremony was held to celebrate the best films of 2019. There was no host, as there had been at the previous ceremony. The ceremony was televised by ABC. For the 18th year in a row, it was held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. This was the first time in Oscar history that more than three films were up for ten or more awards. Since its conception in 1929, the Oscars have been given out 3,140 times.
