Book Review: How I Became A Tree

Hey everyone! I am here again with a review of a book I have read recently.

Not gonna lie, I picked up this book solely because of its incredible title. The plant life has always intrigued me, and it's a shame that despite how deeply I feel invested in it, I hadn't done any extensive reading to prove or even further liberate my deep-seated attachment to the green world.

Every time I run into a wilting flower or a dead tree, I somehow equate it to a paper cut on my own skin, a transient feeling I know for certain will pass, but still one that I could never find the right words to describe. Until, of course, I breathed through Sumana's words and in them discovered a kind of belonging I didn't know I was capable of.

Usually I try to talk about the plot of the book in these posts but since this is strictly non-fiction, my thoughts are as scattered as the book's chapters, so I'm just letting my incoherent mind lead the way. To jump straight to the point - I think I've grown obsessed with this book, owing to Sumana's gorgeous, thought-provoking and profoundly satisfying prose.

That she kept it brimming with references from Bengal and its many cultural pivots was redeeming enough, but what really felt special about it was the way it slowly graduated to a crash course in the craft of writing itself, for me.

My favourite bits have to be the times Sumana spoke about her own family, the little details about her private life she kept spilling, like her husband's height, their first meeting and how they once travelled to Gaya just to experience the Bodhi tree. Also, I wish I could've learnt more about her kinship with the Tagore family, but I understand that she had to explore other themes too and I enjoyed all of them equally.

Sumana's relentless empathy and compassion for the plant life has instilled a fairly diluted version of the same in me, so much that I now take every chance I get to steal a solitary moment with a tree. I don't know how to recommend this book enough - so I'm begging you - please read it.

If anyone of you have read it already, do let me know your thoughts in the comments below. Thank you for patience reading. Have a nice day ahead!
