The girl on the train is Paula Hawkins first thriller novel. The author is born and bought up in Zimbabwe and moved to London in 1989. Paula worked as a journalist for fifteen years before turning her hand to fiction.

The girl on the train, this story revolves around the character Rachel, an alcoholic who has been recently separated from her husband. Rachel travels through the same train everyday to work, the train takes the route where she is able to see her old house, her ex husband with his new wife and new family. As she travels through that train Rachel admires that the town’s water towers, the bridges, the Victorian houses. She witnesses the lives of people through the train window, as she says “ There’s something comforting about the sight of strangers in their homes”. Throughout her journey, there is this particular house that catches her attention. The couple in that house is everything that Rachel inspired her life to be. The perfect and loving husband and the beautiful and caring wife. Rachel was content to an extent to see that couple so much in love but then Rachel’s world turns upside down when Megan, the woman she used to watch through her seat window goes missing, the bigger plot is that Rachel witnesses Megan kiss a man, a man who isn't her husband through the window of the train. Alongside all this drama there is Tom and Anna, Rachel’s ex husband and his new wife.Rachel is constantly restrained from having any sorts of connection with her ex husband, but alcohol gets the better of her and she eventually ends up interrupting the peaceful lives of Tom and Anna. The story takes its thrilling turn when Megan goes missing and Rachel goes on a journey to rescue Megan, but instead is caught in the web of lies woven by her husband, the person whom she still trusts. What happens when Rachel discovers things that she shouldn’t be knowing.

The plot of the book is enthralling, it keeps the readers hooked on the book but the climax of the book is a little disappointing. The author has managed to keep the quality of the story crisp, but its like so much thrill and suspense was built for an end that was not a boom.
