“ Cinema Has No Boundary; It is A Ribbon of Dream. ” - Orson Welles.

Cinema is a dream of director ; Meticulously designed and carefully crafted dream, Just to Share with us few.

Every time, When I'm watching a good movie , I love to imagine ,

A Group  of world Class Chefs running around kitchen to serve a delicious International Dish Just for me.

OK ,Now, A movie for us is different story from what it is to a director.

A Director can make any one realize their dreams; Any one like writers, authors or any one with a story to tell/a dream to share.

Dreams are stories After all ; Often far from reality yet realistic than Myth/Fantasy.

Fantasy/myth has unrealistic characters in its story. Like a two headed dragon and its slayer with a sword made of Diamond;

While in a Dream, a common man like us, slays the dragon. Movie is a dream that can wipe the line between fantasy ,Myth and Reality.

A Great director can share a dream ;whether its his own or not, In Most magical way possible.

He can make Thousands cry, laugh, smile, scare ,Thrill and fascinated by his single "Shared Dream Space" called Movie.

There are Thousands of legends and hundreds of pioneers in cinema.

I have to say but with sadness , Indian film industry is producing highest number of movies in an year ,but only few are getting the buzz and thanks to the diversity, Regional cinema , Predominant in Southern states is also reaching the top boards in Social networking and video sharing platforms. It is an added advantage ;

But the real issue is it is not reaching the Elite Cinema World where true cinema is flourishing.

The Art needs intellectual audience to entertain and needs an intellectual artist to get scrutinized.

Indian cinema is in need of intellectual audience since Intellectual artists cannot scrutinize each and every cinema out there.

Only Audience can refine and define the cinema and its worth.

The Dreamers and Dream Catchers :

Like I said before; there are Thousands of directors in the world but I'm taking here those only who created ripples on the celluloid; and still have their imprint on the world cinema.

Alfred Hitchcock - USA - Horror, Thriller.

A pioneer in the genre of horror and slasher thrillers. He redefined both the thriller and horror genre in a sensational way.

Today every movie in these genres uses at least one of his methods like lighting ,script writing and composing etc.

The renaissance caused by Hitchcock is just a spark that ignited many reforms in almost all genres and shaped it into today's cinema.

Best works in Horror/thriller genre :

Notorious(1946),Rear window(1954),Vertigo(1958),Psycho(1960),

Frenzy(1972) etc.

Akira Kurosawa : Japanese - Drama, Epics and Historical drama.

Kurosawa's work is an open book to Newcomers and his composition of sequences using natural elements like smoke, snow and air is nothing but fascinating.

Kurosawa makes a moving painting and its not a lie. I've read some where , that kurosawa is a great painter and he paints the key scenes for his movie and then he make them. I cant speak enough about that scene in movie “Ran” where old king becomes mad and leaving the fort.

Best works in Drama/historical drama genre :

Scandal(1950), Rashomon(1950)* (absolute best, must for script writers.),Seven samurai(1954),Throne of blood( Macbeth in Japanese), Yojimbo(1960), Dersu Uzala (1975),Ran(1984),Kagemusha etc.

Andrei Tarkovsky : Russian - Drama , Extreme Philosophy and Artistic.

Most of Tarkovsky's work is very difficult to comprehend and sometimes it is even difficult to watch, not because of the visuals but the theme he took, will be nothing like we experienced before and it is complete insult to cinematic limits and tropes. Tarkovsky, only made 7 films in his 24 yrs career and all movies are used as lessons in film institutes.

Frequent use of longshots, portrait like cuts and flowing water and beautiful set pieces is an absolute delight to watch. His movies may not be for all, but it surely feel like they are purest form of cinema and it is  phenomenal.

Just google the best cinematography of Andrei Tarkovsky and you will know him.

Best Works in Drama :

Ivan's childhood(1962), Andrei Rublev(1966),Solaris(1972),Mirror(1975),

Stalker(1979),Nostalgia(1983),The Sacrifice(1986).

Sergio Leone: Italian-American Director: Spaghetti Western.

Leone is the creator of Spaghetti western genre; An Extravagant filmy ride filled with cowboys ,ridiculous closeups and gripping shoot outs.

Inspired from the movies of kurosawa  like Yojimbo and Sanjuro and 7 samurai, Leone mastered the one on one shoot outs in his movies and created launchpad for Western genre and for Clint eastwood the great.

If you want to know more about westerns just watch any one of his movies.

Best works in Western :

The dollar Trilogy : A Fist full of Dollars(1964) , For a Few Dollars More (1965) , The Good, The Bad and The Ugly(1966)

Once upon a time Films: Once upon a time in west(1968), Once upon a time in America(1984).

Spaghetti Western

Buster Keaton : USA : Comedy, drama ,silent films.

Before Charlie Chaplin, No, no, even before sound films era, It is Buster Keaton who ruled.

His Visual and Physical comedy is still regarded as legendary. Keaton's life is also an example of “curse of sadness” upon comedian's lives(R.I.P Robin Williams),but he made a strong come back and got his throne back.

Most of the Keaton's works are silent films and they are hilarious and very creative. Keaton is also famous for his stunt works in his comedic acts

Best Works in Comedy :

The Navigator (1924) ,Sherlock Jr. (1924) , Seven chances(1925),The General (1926) ,The Cameraman(1928) etc.

These are all the greatest of world cinema who paved path for modern era of movies and strongly supported the need of constant Innovation in cinema.

Thanks and Peace.
