Approximately a combined 49.5% of seats all over India are reserved for various minority groups, religious, caste, region etc. This also includes the 27% reserved for OBC. This number has been kept just 0.5 away from 50% as the Supreme Court had ruled that reservation couldn't be more than 50% of the total seats.
However, it must be noted that the concept of reservations that was initiated after the independence of India under Article 334 of the Indian Constitution was not meant to be permanent. It had originally meant to cease in 1960 however, its period was extended till 1970 through the 8th Amendment of the Constitution. This again got extended to 2020 through the 95th Amendment Act and again till 2030 through the 104th Amendment. This reservation concept has just been increasing every time rather than ceasing it as per the plans of the Constitution makers.
Each time the reservation period is extended due to political reasons so that our ministers can secure their vote banks for the next elections. The reserved class is more 50% of all the nation which get maneuvered by these benefits to fill the vote banks of politicians. Reservations were undoubtedly very important in early India after independence where there was large existence of untouchability, varna system and discrimination on religion, caste, region etc. However, I am of the opinion that hardly any person is subject the untouchability, discrimination on the base of religion, caste or region. In today's time it is difficult to different people on the basis of their caste as they have mingled well into the society.
Yet, I do not ask for complete dissolution of the reservation system. Reservations are and will always be necessary but for the Economically Weaker Section(EWS) who fail to get opportunities because of poor financial conditions. Today, our country is subject to more poverty than discrimination, yet those are benefitted who need no support. For eg.: there is a well off person who comes under one of the reserved sections. He/she has had good education and other benefits of attending self-enhancing programs and on the other hand is a general poor person but doesn't come under EWS as he/she has a little more. This poor person didn't get good education. Now the well of person gets a job due to reservation but the poor one fails to. The poor person along with his/her family will stay under poverty for generations due to this.
We as the youth need to talk about this as we are the future of this nation.
