Thy Name Is A Woman

From ancient Ramayana and Mahabharata to modern Hamlet, women have been portrayed as weak, object of pleasure, slave of men, symbol of honor and liability. We often get to listen that women were the root cause of war in Ramayana and Mahabharata. How?

Women have been described as frail and weak in character in Shakespeare's novel. As we all have read the famous proverb from Hamlet - “Frailty, thy name is woman”.

When I was in school, I used to think women of old era were underprivileged as they were deprived of proper education, equality in society and respect. I used to think that I am one of luckiest girl in the world because I am born in this so called 21st century. Little did I know that society never changes for women. No matter how much we fight for our rights and government launches schemes for women's equality, the patriarchy which has been deep rooted in the minds of people is always going judge us and give us a tag. It is very easy for men as well as women, yes… you read right, to character assassinate women.

There are still thousands or even more women and girls living here who are being tagged as “such type” just because they are ambitious and they want to break the chain which has been coiled over them since time immemorial. We are always told that girls get mature earlier than boys so we should neglect boy's notorious activity. But none of us has ever heard someone telling boys to learn from girls as they mature in early age. Before anyone gets me wrong here and try to mock me, let me be clear that this is just a single example of our society's thinking and mentality.

If the male child in the family helped in kitchen with her mother that too once in a blue moon, he will be appreciated and his works will be exaggerated. But no one even bothers to talk politely to the female child of the same family who has been working whole day and managing other works as well. Is it fair?

Is it necessary that we repeat the same thing which our ancestors have done? Being more educated and civilized, can we not change such hypocrisy and patriarchal thinking which is slowly eating the other half?

Charity begins from home. If we start giving equal privilege to both genders in our family, the society will change in a flip because we are the society!!
