Finally, you decided to focus on your work or say studies , after spending lots and lots of time scrolling your phone for no reason . You kept your phone aside and started focusing on your stuff . After a while you heard a notification sound and your concentration got imbalanced a little bit . You ignored it . But but but , few minutes later it pops up again . Now this time you can’t help it , right? . Yeah , I know you . You are so like me . Even larger percentage of people fall into this category . That rush of happiness or rather excitement to check what would be that notification is about ? You are so compelled to hold your phone and click on to that notification without bothering about what important work you were doing before .
WELCOME , TO THE WORLD OF ‘‘ SMARTPHONE DYSTOPIA ’’
This sudden and flying rush that evolves while tapping on the notification icon is due to the happiness - inducing chemical , DOPAMINE . It releases when you are expecting a reward or when you feel happy . It is a ‘ happy hormone ‘.
But , wait , what about that other term ‘ smartphone dystopia ‘ ? What does this word dystopia even mean ? Complex and hard to understand , right? I was also unfamiliar with this word until yesterday . You might have heard about the word ‘ UTOPIA ‘ which means ‘ the ideal place ‘. So, when the latin prefix dys which means ‘ bad ‘ , has been added to the word utopia - dystopia discovered .
I have an interesting question for you now . How many times do you think mobile users on an average taps , swipes and clicks their phone a day ? I was shocked with the answer for a while , but when I realized that we are always on our phone like 24*7 , then I thought it’s quite possible . So, what research says is , it is around two thousand six hundred and seventeen times a day . Yes, as I told you earlier , it was shocking for me too .
The apps and devices of which we have got addicted to are quietly reducing the percentage of purposeful and valid interaction that we have with each other . Through social media , people try to project themselves as the person they are looking to on their social media handles. These sites are full of lies and myths , as the people whom we idealize , they only put their happy side on the internet . And we start fantasizing about the life, body , profession they have got . We start comparing ourselves with them . This gives rise to the feeling of fear , insecurity , anxiety , jealousy etc .
These tech companies use people’s emotions , so that they can trap them in their products. They survey people's likes , dislikes , preferences and choices to create a product , which will eventually originate Craving for the products or services made by them . People say they are free and can do anything according to their will. But , it’s not like that , their mind has been hijacked by their phones . They have become slaves of apps , online games , social media platforms etc .
JUST IMAGINE , WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN IF WE LET TECHNOLOGY SLIDE MORE AND MORE INTO OUR LIVES .
