Produced by Pierrot and TV Tokyo, the first season of the anime television series Naruto is directed by Hayato Date. The season centers on Naruto Uzumaki, who lives in Hidden Leaf Village and aspires to be the next Hokage and win the respect of the locals. It is based on Masashi Kishimoto's manga series.A formidable being dubbed the Nine-tailed Demon Fox assaulted the ninja hamlet of Konoha twelve years prior to the beginning of the series, murdering several people. In retaliation, the Fourth Hokage, the head of Konoha, gave his life in order to contain the demon inside the infant Naruto Uzumaki. For the most of Naruto's early years, however, he was tormented by Konoha, who thought of him as the demon fox itself. Years later, the outlaw ninja Mizuki tricks Naruto into stealing a forbidden scroll that would reveal a secret ninja skill, but Iruka Umino, his teacher, stops him. After discovering that he is the Nine-Tailed Fox's container, Mizuki almost kills Iruka while defending Naruto. Naruto then utilizes the Shadow Clone Technique, a Jutsu he acquired from the scroll, to destroy Mizuki. Under the strict and experienced sensei Kakashi Hatake, an exceptional ninja, Naruto is assigned to the three-person Team 7 team, which includes Sakura Haruno, his crush, and Sasuke Uchiha, with whom he frequently competes.
