Velliangiri Mountains
Lord Shiva is traditionally recognised as the God of Gods and as the embodiment of the Supreme Being. There were many temples in India dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is regarded the most significant deity in Hinduism. We were ready to learn about the history of one of Lord Shiva's most prominent hill temples, Velliangiri Temple.
The Velliangiri Lord
The Velliangiri Andavar Cave Temple is located atop Girimalai, the seventh hill in the Velliangiri Hills, at an altitude of roughly 6000 feet at the end of an extremely steep mountain route. The temple is situated in a densely forested area where the weather is generally bitterly cold. Due of the high amount of wildlife activity, this temple closes at 6 p.m. There are steps at the back of the temple that lead up the hill on the north side.
The Linga on the seventh hill of the Velliangiri Hills is a self-made naturally rising Linga. Velliangiri is said to be a gathering spot for sages and wise people.
Location
13 kilometres from the foothills of Poondi temple. Altitude: 5833 feet, 30 kilometres from Coimbatore's economic district.
Things to know before embarking on the journey:
Except for a water bottle, no plastic is permitted to be carried on the mountain. Guards at the bottom of the mountain will completely check you, even the biscuit cover, and they have paper bags in which all your materials will be moved and safely returned to you. Carry no more than necessary luggage or tents; slopes will become steeper as you complete each mountain.
Buying a bamboo stick at the foot of the hill is required, as it will only help and support you to climb up and run down with grip; it costs around Rs.20 and will be available at the bottom of hills; make sure to pick the right one.
