Language is used to express our views and opinions. It plays a major role in communication. India was colonized by the British and before them there were many foreign rulers who had invaded India. With them they brought their customs, traditions, religion as well as language. English education was officially introduced in 1835. From then onwards the language has gained immense popularity and people having knowledge of it are considered to be superior. Now India is the second largest English speaking country in the world.
What if there was no English subject in our education system or if it was not given enough importance as it is now? The answer to this question varies, based on the thought process of people. In my opinion, English language is as important as Hindi or any other native language. English is a universally accepted language, so it makes the process of communication easier as well as efficient without causing any sort of confusion or problems. It also makes the study of laws, theories and big events like the wars and colonization of countries much easier. With globalization, migration of people from one country to another in search of better jobs or education has increased along with the increase in movement of goods and services. In such situations, the knowledge of an international language will help us in the longer run. Thus, the incorporation of English subject in our syllabus is as important as that of any other language.
As India is a diverse country with more than 500 languages, we should ensure that we don't overlook or give less importance to any other language due to English in order to help our languages stay alive. Because no matter what we should always uphold our traditions and customs which are strongly connected to our respective languages. In conclusion, the curriculum should be designed in such a way that children have complete knowledge of both their native as well as English language and both the languages should be taught until the end of high school. Ensuring that each and every student can write and speak fluently both the languages.
