THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD
It is a popular saying. Here pen stands for writer and sword for the fighter. Both the pen and the sword are powerful weapons. The pen represents the power of the mind, Sword represents the physical ower. Sword is a weapon of destruction. Missiles, tanks, nuclear bombs etc. are today's substitutes for the sword. Napoleon and Alexander destroyed many countries with the power of
Sword. So the sword is a powerful weapon. But the pen is more powerful than the sword. The great writers influenced the people with the power of their pens. ?
The writings of Rousseau and Voltaire brought about the French Revolution. The writing of Karl Marx spread communism in great countries like Russia and China. The writings of Tagore, Bankimchandra, Aurobindo etc. inspired people during the freedom movement of India. Shakespeare's plays are a source of pleasure even after five hundred years. The great empires of the world like the British empire and the Roman Empire built by sword power are no more. But, though the great writers are dead, their writings are still fresh This is because the pen is creative; the sword is destructive; the pen brings peace and knowledge. sword brings suffering. The effect of pen lingers forever. A well-written work is an everlasting source of knowledge. So, the pen is mightier than the sword.
Terrorism
Terrorism is a burning question of today. There is hardly any country that is free from terror activities. Thus it is a global problem. Terrorism means to create fear and panic among the people. The terrorists terrify the people and the government to gain their ends. This they do by kidnapping,
senseless killing, hijacking planes, exploding bombs in public places, destroying govt. establishments, spreading rumours and creating violence etc.
Terrorists are usually young working under old political brains. These young men are guided and trained for terrorist activities. Some terrorists have them. own organisations, the most famous one in the world is Al-Qaeda' of Osama bin Laden. Terrorists are well equipped with sophisticated weapons. Osman terrorists are suicide bombers who kill themselves to kill others. Terrorists have no religion and no faith in human values. Their only religion is
bloodshed. Our country is also passing through the curse of terrorism. Assam,
Kashmir, Nagaland etc. report at least one event of terrorism almost every day.
