Story behind the temple:

Hey guys let's see the tale of  ekambaranathar temple.

There is a fascinating legend around the shrine.

Goddess Parvathi once playfully covered Lord Shiva's eyes, according to the temple sthala purana (history). The world was completely dark. Shiva made the situation better by opening his third eye.

Parvathi was told to do atonement(self-punishment) for her wrong karma. So that she Born as Kamakshi, she did penance on the banks of Vegavathi River under a mango tree (which is now the ancient tree of the temple) by creating a Shivlingam with sand and worshipping the Prithvi Shivlingam (prithvi=earth).

Lord Shiva wanted to test her devotion, so he surrounded the place with fire were she worshipping. In order to ask for help, Goddess Parvati started praying to her brother, Lord Vishnu. To save Parvati, Vishnu took the moon from Lord Shiva’s head and showered its rays onto the mango tree and Parvati to cool it down.

For the purpose of identifying how stubborn Parvati is, Lord Shiva this time  sent river Ganga to threaten and disturb Parvati’s penance by creating flood. But Parvati requested Ganga and convinced her that they are sisters and worship the same supreme power, Lord Shiva.  But Ganga answered, Dispite of parvathi's karma she has to do it, As the water approached, Kamakshi (Parvathi) embraced the sand Shivlingam to save it from being washed off by the water. Touched by her devotion, Shiva married Her. As Shiva was emotionally moved by Her devotional embracement, He is known here as ‘Thazhuva kuzhainthaar’(He who melted in Her embrace).

Still the sand lingam is covered with silver sheet, however it is reported that Kamakshi's bangles left a mark on  the Prithvi Lingam when she embraced the lingam while the water approach.

Intresting thing about the mango tree:

  •     It's is more than 3500 years old and still it give mangoes.
  •  That's the main mysterious is that tree gives 4 various types of flavoured mangos.
  •  The flavour of mangoes are likely sweet, spicy, citric and bitter.

Other interesting facts about the Temple:

  •      Every year on March 19, 20,  and 21 of the Panguni month (April–May), when the Panguni Uthiram, the temple's most significant celebration, is held, sunlight shines squarely on the Shiva linga.
  •   The inner passage of the temple has ten pillars that make various musical noises when you tap them with a stick.
