Folks Are You Eating Healthy?
- Eat a variety of nutrient - rich foods - Our body needs more than 40 different nutrients for good health, and no single food supplies them all. We should eat a healthy combination of foods during the day. If you have had an extra-heavy lunch, compensate with a light dinner.
- Eat enough carbohydrates - Carbohydrates like rice, pasta, wholegrain bread and potatoes provide us with the energy we need. More than half the calorie intake should be in the form of carbohydrates.
- Enjoy plenty of fruits and vegetables - How many times have you heard this being said. It's true. Fruits and vegetables are a must to stay healthy and fit.
- Understand your diet - Understand what is wrong with your eating habits. Write down everything you eat for 3 days. Then check your list. Are you eating too much butter or sugar? Are you getting enough fruits and vegetables? Now balance your food intake. Remember, there are no good foods and no bad foods, there are good diets and bad diets.
- Make changes gradually - There are no shortcuts or easy answers to a healthy diet. You cannot and should not change overnight. Your body needs to adjust to the change in food intake gradually.
- Maintain a healthy weight - Find out your BMI (Body Mass Index) . If your BMI is more than 25, you are overweight and need to do something about it. Excess body fat increases your chances for high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, some types of cancer, and other illnesses. On the flip side, if your BMI is below 19, you are underweight, which increases risk for osteoporosis and other health problems.
- Reduce, do not eliminate certain foods - If your favourite foods are high in cholestrol, milk, salt or sugar, the key is moderating how much of these foods you eat and how often you eat them, not banishing them completely.
- Eat regularly - Never skip a meal, especially breakfast. Snacking between meals can help curb hunger, but dont'eat so much that your snack becomes an entire meal. Eat atleast 4 meals a day.
- Eat moderate portions - If you keep portion sizes reasonable, it's easier to eat the foods you want and stay healthy. Do not glut on your favourite foods.
- Drink enough fluids - Doctors advise to drink at least 1.5 litres of water a day. A large glass of water, first thing in the morning, is believed to be very beneficial.
