Fun Facts About Dogs

Yawning can cause a cold in dogs. The sound of a human yawn, according to studies, can cause your dog to yawn. And it happens four times more often when it's a familiar yawn.

Dogs have an incredible sense of smell, but don't forget about their hearing! Everything from the position of their ears to the muscles in their bodies helps dogs pick up on sounds that humans cannot hear.

The most common explanation for why dogs tilt their heads is that they are attempting to locate the source of a sound.

If you've ever noticed your dog twitching in her sleep, it's most likely because she's dreaming. Researchers discovered that dogs and humans have similar sleep patterns and brain activity.

According to canine researcher and author Stanley Coren, your toddler and puppy have similar brains. He also stated that man's best friend can count, understand over 150 words, and even trick people or other dogs into giving him treats.

Border collies are the smartest dog breed, and their intelligence varies by breed. If your dog wags its tail excitedly, it must be pleased to see you, right? No, not always. Dogs wag their tails to the right when they're happy and to the left when they're scared, according to Discovery.com.

Low tail wagging indicates insecurity, while rapid tail wagging accompanied by tense muscles or dilated pupils can indicate aggression. According to Psychology Today, newborn dogs' ear canals and ears are still developing.

Even though they sweat through the pads of their paws, panting is their primary mode of cooling down. So these long-haired dogs are definitely warm. Some pet owners may notice the lingering scent of corn chips or popcorn around their dog.

This is known as "Frito feet," and it occurs when sweat and bacteria accumulate in the paws. You'd think your dog's mouth would smell like, well, dog. However, persistent bad breath can be a sign of dental disease or other health issues.

If you haven't already, have your dog's teeth checked by a veterinarian at least once a year. Keep an eye out for other common signs that your dog is ill.

It's no secret that dogs frequently consume their own faeces (and other faecal matter too). But, while it may be disgusting, the ASPCA claims it is perfectly normal, dating back to their pre-domestication days thousands of years ago. The behaviour is more common in puppies, and older dogs usually outgrow it, though some continue to do so into adulthood.
