Actually this is a picture of mucormycosis, also known as black fungus. This is caused by a fungus named mucormycetes.  It's a type of fungus that can affect the human body, specifically the head region. 

Not a very common disease seen in human beings. Mucormycosis mainly affects people who have health problems or take medicines that lower the body's ability to fight germs and sickness.

Health problems includes : diabetes mellitus, HIV, low WBC count like due presence of worms in the intestine etc.

Medicines that can affect our body's immune system: steroids, immunemodulators, immune suppressents, anti-cancer drugs, radiation therapy etc. 

If you are having  any of them no need to panic, because this disease of the fungus is preventable and also curable. Preventable, as always follow the drug schedule of your doctor and don't self prescribe any medicine, like steroids should be taken according to the prescribed dose because for the time being it increases your glucose levels and make you prone to the disease.

Now you might be having a question that why would you use steroids and for what, actually it has been seen that usage of steroids in regulated dose reduces the mortality rate. The steroid reduces the inflammation of the lungs and lowers the formation of scar tissue or more precisely fibrous tissue. Also this increase in glucose level is only/usually seen in systemic use of steroids and not so commonly seen in topical usage like inhaler use, that contains steroids like budesonide. 

This fugal condition can also be avoided by not using the same mask twice because the warm air create a good environment for the fungal growth, so either wash it or discard it, you also practice few things like inhalation of steam through nose 👃, this helps a lot. 

Now if in any condition you are affected by the disease then consultant your doctor as soon as possible because it's a lethal condition and can result in dreaded complications, there are drugs available that can treat the condition like Amphotericin - B, Posaconazole etc. 

But as you know precaution is better than cure. So follow just few simple steps to be on the safe side.
