Indian cricket's governing body, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), revealed the country's 15-man T20 World Cup 2022 roster on Monday, September 12. The return of fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel following successful recoveries from their individual ailments means that there are no significant shocks in the lineup.
After India's poor performance in the just completed Asia Cup 2022, in which the team failed to advance to the final, the BCCI selection committee convened on Monday afternoon to choose the roster. The competition revealed India's bowling issues, and Bumrah and Harshal's comeback has reinforced the pace attack in preparation for the World Cup.
Due to injury, both pacers missed the trip to the Asia Cup. Now that they are completely healed, they have started receiving instruction at Bengaluru's National Cricket Academy (NCA). Bumrah, Harshal, and the seasoned Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, and will lead India's speed battery.
After an underwhelming performance by Indian pacers at the Asia Cup, senior pacer Mohammed Shami was thought to be in the running to rejoin the T20 team. He was chosen, along with young spinner Ravi Bishnoi and Deepak Chahar, as one of the backup players for India's Asia Cup team.
Axar Patel has been brought in as a like-for-like substitute for star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who was unable to play following recent knee surgery. India's go-to all-rounder, Hardik Pandya, continues to be Deepak Hooda, who will also be expected to contribute when the ball is needed.
The batting order is almost unchanged from the group selected for the Asia Cup. The selectors kept the top four players—Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav—along with Pandya and Hooda in the middle, leaving out players like Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and others.
As anticipated, Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant both made the cut. Given his current form, Karthik may have made the team as a specialist finisher even though Pant is most likely to be the first-choice wicketkeeper. In case of injuries, India has maintained Shreyas Iyer in the reserves.
Dinesh Karthik's wish came true on Monday when India unveiled their team for the T20 World Cup 2022. Along with Rishabh Pant, Karthik has been chosen to represent India at the World Cup in Australia as one of the two wicketkeepers. The seasoned wicket-keeper hitter has had an outstanding year thus far and will be hoping to carry on his excellent form in the championship game next month.
