Before Suryakumar (50 not out in 33 balls) relieved the pressure put on him by KL Rahul (51 not out, 56 balls), India's target of 107 on a pitch with underlying moisture and more than waist high bounce at times was a struggle. India won the game in 16.4 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The hosts made three changes from the eleven that won the series against Australia in Hyderabad, according to Rohit Sharma, who earlier won the toss and decided to bowl first. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep and left-handed batter Pant are now in the lineup in place of Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who have been given the series' rest.

Death bowling has been the biggest worry for India moving forward, and skipper Rohit Sharma specifically mentioned it. Due to rest ahead of the ICC tournament next month, the hosts will be missing two of their top bowlers, Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

In his comeback series against Australia, Harshal Patel did not have the best of times, but in the remaining three games before the World Cup, it is believed that he will return to form. His career economy rate is 9.05, but against the Australians, he let up more than 12 runs per over.

In the last series, Deepak Chahar, who is also on standby for the World Cup, was not given an opportunity, but he may get one if the team decides to rotate its pacers throughout the three games.

Together with Jasprit Bumrah, who will be attempting to rediscover his full rhythm following his comeback from injury, Arshdeep Singh's return will help the team's resources in slog overs.

India will play a bilateral series against a side they have yet to defeat at home over the course of the upcoming week. Despite the very different playing environment in Australia, South Africa and India will meet off there in a group game. Both sides may choose which areas to focus on in the following three games.
