Every year, thousands of applicants attempt the IAS exam in an effort to become an IAS officer, IPS officer, etc. In India, the public services are highly sought after due to the respect and authority they bring. When you begin your UPSC preparation, there are a few crucial points to keep in mind if you are a novice IAS applicant who will be taking the IAS prelims for the first time in a year. You can learn about the five key factors that every newcomer should be aware of before beginning the IAS preparation in this article.

One can apply for State Civil Services Exams (State PCS) and can become a civil servant in a State. One doesn’t need to have a domicile for applying for a particular State and can appear for as many State PCS exams as one wants. However, one needs to qualify that State language exam. Hindi speaking aspirants can in fact appear for nine State PCS exams.

If you are dedicated to clearing the UPSC exam within 1–1.5 years, you will have to manage your time. The most crucial aspect of your preparation journey is 8–10 hours of self-study. If you can strategize your preparation time, this also reflects how competent you will be as an IAS officer, where you will be bound to look into hundreds of things at a time.

UPSC is qualified by people who have a personality of their own. That means they understand themselves better, they know their strengths and limitations, and they can defend their statements, their perspective and their actions rationally. Every human being posses some good and bad characteristics; personality attributes which help one in personal and professional growth are categorized as good traits and vice versa.

Keep in mind that I have never worked a day in my life. Fun was had by all (Edison). Make the process enjoyable, take pleasure in reading, love what you do, and act in a way that makes you feel good. not the culture.

Even if thousands of candidates apply and sit for the exam, there are only 2000–3000 genuine candidates left. Those who diligently and methodically study are hired. You will join them if you follow suit. Before you even begin, don't be afraid. To win, you must compete and put forth a lot of effort.

You have to put all of your trust in the examination since it is so confusing (Oxymoron). While there may be flaws in the way exams are conducted or hiring procedures for UPSC members, corruption in the selection of civil service officials is never a factor. Pure steel is made. You can rely on it. (But, that is a different story because it later becomes corroded)
