We all know that overeating is a problem that so many people struggle with everyday. So to control this issue, we can stop binge eating and balancing our overall diet. Though there are many effective ways that can be used to stop overeating but we should also focus on the "why" factors. According to some researchers, there are many psychological reasons for overeating. The most common reasons includes inner satisfaction or joy from food rather than enjoying life, it's circumstances or events including self skills and strengths to deal with; sometimes lack of time makes people to eat more with an unexplainable thought of balancing other meals they tend to skip; some people while maintaining or going through a dieting phase tends to accidentally entangle them into reverse Psychology; and so on. Over all the factors describing the psychological causes of overeating, we must imply useful solutions to overcome this psychological issue.

Let's discuss some of the ways we can practice to avoid overeating:

  • Use smaller sized plates while eating- Perception can be a major factor contributing to overeating. So, using smaller plates than usual can create an effect on our quantity of food seeming larger than our usual routine.A study in Cornell University explained that reducing the size of a plate can help 30% reduction in the quantity of consumption on average. Also, consumption of healthy food over larger plates can help improve and balance our diet.
  • Hydrate yourself with a glass of water before eating a meal- We know, an adult human body is constituted upto 60% of water, so a glass full of water before a meal can create a sense of fullness thus reducing our habit overeating and helping us to consume lesser amount of food to satisfy our hunger.
  • Don't skip meals, specially breakfast- Breakfast is really the most important meal of the day. And according to some researchers, skipping breakfast may lead to a bigger chance of being overweight, eating unhealthy food or fast food and snacks thus reducing consumptions of healthier food like fruits, vegetables, cereals, etc.
  • Practice eating volumetrics- This form of dieting super successful in reducing overeating. Some healthline reports suggest that volumetrics is a way of reducing unhealthy diet by focusing on low-calorie food, high-fiber foods such as non-starchy vegetables. There's no such high restrictions while maintaining this diet.
  • Portion control- This is a challenging attempt to avoid overeating but it is an essential part of it. If we consider consuming a planned diet of what we should eat and what we actually want to eat rather than eating anything we see in front of is, we'll less likely to overeat.

I would like to add a little more about my personal take on this issue:

I feel, we should never ever try to be harsh on ourselves to satisfy our insecurities or just to please others emphasizing on what they will think and if society will have a negative effect on us! The thing is, we have to learn to accept ourselves and acknowledge the issues we have instead of brewing up negative emotions. If you love eating, do it, your happiness matters but also set a mark or like "this is the dead end for me", kind of reminder so it doesn't harm your physical and mental health. Don't force yourself to do something that you know your body might not be able to take it!

There's no need for sessions or treatments, if you learn to master your mind!

And at last, I would finish this article by saying, “never forget to love yourself and to look for your happiness… you deserve the best!”

Much love,

Reema.
