Albert Gonzalez was a notorious hacker who was convicted of committing a number of high-profile cybercrimes in the United States. He was born on November 3, 1981 in Miami, Florida, and began hacking at a young age.
Gonzalez first gained notoriety in the early 2000s for his involvement in a hacking group called the "ShadowCrew," which was responsible for stealing and selling millions of credit card numbers and other personal information. The group operated on a website called "CardersMarket," where members would buy and sell stolen credit card numbers, social security numbers, and other personal information. Gonzalez, who went by the online handle "soupnazi," was one of the leaders of the group and played a key role in its operations.
In 2005, Gonzalez was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit fraud in connection with his involvement in the ShadowCrew. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation, but he continued to engage in illegal hacking activities.
In 2007, Gonzalez and other hackers gained access to the computer systems of several major retailers, including TJX Companies, BJ's Wholesale Club, and OfficeMax. Over the course of several months, they stole the personal information of tens of millions of customers, including credit card numbers, social security numbers, and other sensitive data. The breach, which was one of the largest in history at the time, resulted in the loss of billions of dollars for the affected companies and their customers.
Gonzalez was eventually caught and arrested in 2008. He was charged with a variety of crimes, including conspiracy to commit computer fraud and identity theft, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2010.
While in prison, Gonzalez cooperated with authorities and provided information about other hackers and cybercrime organizations, leading to several additional arrests and convictions. In exchange for his cooperation, his sentence was reduced to 15 years, and he was released from prison in 2025.
After his release, Gonzalez became a public speaker and consultant, sharing his knowledge and experience with companies and organizations looking to improve their cybersecurity practices
