In the name of Allah the Beneficent the most Merciful

    Siwaak or Miswak is a twig collected from branches of Salvador tree especially Salvadora persica. Most prominently it is available in Muslim-inhabited areas. Siwaak is used to brush the teeth and cleanse the mouth in the Arabian peninsula, the Horn of Africa, North Africa, parts of the Sahel, the Indian subcontinent, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and Caucasus. In Malaysia, miswak is known as Kayu Sugi which in Malay means 'chewing stick'.

Benefits of using Siwaak :

1. As a Muslim using siwaak is the sunnah (habitual practice of all the Prophets and Messengers may peace and blessings be upon them).
2. Using siwaak throughout the life will lead to blessed death wherein you will die with faith in oneness of Allah.
3. According to Islam, using siwaak has more rewards and benefits like the prayer that is offered after using siwaak is increased to seventy degrees than the prayer that us offered without using siwaak.
4. It contains antibacterial properties due to salvadorine and also helps in controlling the formation and activity of dental plaque.
5. Most of all it cleanse the mouth and it pleases the Allah Almighty.

Etiquettes of Siwaak : 

In this we can know that how should we actually use siwaak.

1. First brush the right side teeth and then brush left side teeth.
2. Brush thrice every side.
3. Everytime you brush bloat the teeth using water.
4. Wash the siwaak before and after every use.
5. Then recite this " Allahumma tahhir fami, wa tahhir badani, wa nawwir qalbi, wa shaddid asnaani, wa harrim jasadi ‘alan nar, wa adkhilni birahmatika fi ‘ibadikas salihin"
   Meaning : O Allah! purify my mouth, purify my body, enlighten my heart, strengthen my teeth, make my body forbidden upon Hell and admit me through Your Mercy among your pious slaves.
6. Whenever Prophet Muhammad may peace be upon Him used to enter His home He used brush His teeth using siwaak.
7. Ali may Allah be pleased with Him said that you mouth is the way for Quran (as you read or memorize it), so cleanse this way using siwaak.
8. One should brush his teeth in width, not in length.
9. The Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him was asked one who does not have teeth should he too use siwaak? Prophet said yes, and He was asked how? He said to put his finger in his mouth and rub it.
10. Allama Shami may Allah's Mercy be on him has written that using Miswak on seven occasions is mustahab (recommended). 

• When teeth has turned yellow.
• When there is bad odour from mouth.
• When waking up from sleep.
• When standing for prayer.
• During every ablution.
• As well as when entering the house and gathering with people.
• And it is recommended to use siwaak before you read the Qur'an as well.

So that's all about Siwaak.
