India has a wide variety of music genres and humungous amount of TV shows and movies released per year, precisely per month. Among all this heavy competition, the K-pop and K-drama industry is flourishing really well among Indians, with a huge rise in its Fan base.
Now for those of you who don't know about about K-pop or k-dramas, it is the name given to the dramas, TV shows and various musical albums produced and released by the South Korean industry, worldwide.
Though the Korean industry was well developed over the years and was well- known world wide, it had and is still having its peak time in India during this pandemic. Since everyone was literally made to marry Netflix and other OTTs during this Lockdown, the scope of them scrolling through all the series available and the diverse variety that was available on the platform was put to use for entertainment.
Statistically speaking, let's take BTS for example, was ranked 68th in India before January 2020 and had an immense rise up to the 8th rank in India as of October 2020. This shows how well people were drawn to their music and variations in the rhythm.
Now that we have seen all the basics, let's get into the topic. Are K-pop and K dramas overrated? I will DEFINITELY disagree. They are not overrated. There are a lot of friends who judge us if we mention this side of our interest. If you say that you love korean music and shows, the first dialogue will be, “ You love those chinese guys?!” “ what is so nice about them that you like"? They start judging you the next second you mention this.
i want to answer as many absurd questions as possible. I strongly believe they are not overrated because the music the k pop artists create have a new touch on the EDM, the instruments coordination and the entire music has a fresh approach. They work hard and practice a lot to achieve the position they have now. Not that I'm comparing but they are one of the members who dance and sing at the same time, without LIP-Syncing. We all know its hard for a human to run and talk simultaneously. Imagine how much training they had to go through for them to have breath control, vocal pitch and dance moves coordination. All these by themselves are life threatening, imagine the skill a person should have to stay in sync with the other dancers or other members of the group. These are just few hardships of the K-pop industry.
Im not saying we listen to them for these reasons only, these are a part of the reasons which lead to good, soulful music. During this pandemic K pop, especially BTS songs have helped me cope with the world really well and develop a positive attitude towards life. And for the people who say “ Do you even understand what they say?” - I'm sorry but that's the reason subtitles exist. and as we fans develop the interest in the culture, we get the interest to learn the language too.
the Fan base is the most dominating one in the world. We love their music for the LYrics, the dedication and the soul that is felt through their music, not Just for their faces. And come on Guys, its high time we stop prejudicing them as Chinese. They have their on identity.
As for k dramas, the plot, the actors, the OST (Original Soundtrack), the story line and the cast is the solid reason to watch them. They do have cliches, but they are different from the normal cliches. For people who want a fresh approach on TV shows and is not biased against anything, You will love k drams, trust me.
Now that I've sold the k industry as much as I could, i would like to include some songs and kdramas for those who have the interest to enter the fandom.
songs: Louder than Bombs
magic shop
love shot
God"s menu
oxygen
Dramas:
Vincenzo
Hospital Playlist
Now Ill stop with these as I'm quite confident these are enough to drag anyone into the culture (especially for the cast and the food), I warn you Its a blackhole. Once you start it, there"s no stopping you.
A small note: the song Open Gangnam Style is k pop song for those of you who don't know it….
I hope whoever reads this will find some interest in this field :)
