Definition Of Prescription And Their Various Parts, Handling Of Prescription By Pharmacist.

*Definition of prescription.

Prescription is an written order by physician/dentist or any of registered medical practitioner to a pharmacist to compound and dispense a specific medication for the patient.

*Various parts of prescription.

1.Date 

  • Date must be written by prescriber(doctor) at the same time when it is written.
  • Date helps the pharmacist to find out late purchase of drugs.
  • It is legally required to avoid misuse of prescription for an indefinite period.

2. Name, Age, Sex and Address of patient.

  • Name, Age, Sex and Address of the patient must be written on the prescription.
  • If these are not written then the pharmacist should ask the patient and write them on the prescription.
  • This helps in checking the medication and the dose and also for further reference.

3. Subscription (Rx)

The subscription is represented by Rx which is written at the beginning of the prescription.it also written as Rj and it is the symbol of Latin word “Recipe” i.e. ‘you take’ or ‘take thou’ ,i.e. prayer to Jupiter, means the god of healing.

Superscription direct the pharmacist to compound the ingredient in a stender dosage form.

4. Inscription

  • It is the main part of prescription.
  • It also called body of prescription.
  • It contains the names and quantities of prescribed ingredients.
  • Each ingredient is written in seperate line and last item is generally vehicle.
  • In complex prescription, inscription is divided into three parts:1)Base or active medicament. 2) Adjuvant or additives.3) The vehicle.

5.Subscription

It contains direction to pharmacist regarding:

a) Compounding ingredients in a given dosage form.

b)How to prepare the dosage form.

c) Quantity to send and manner of sending

6.Singnetura/Transcription

It gives instruction to the patient about:

a)Use of prescription.

b) Method of administration or application.

c)The dose of preparation.

d) Time of administration or application.

e) The vehicle  with which the dosage is to be taken.

f) The part of the body to which the drug is to be applied

7.Signature , Address and Regs.No.of  Prescriber.

  • They are necessary for prescribers identity and for further reference.

#Why Latin used in prescription ?

  • Restion of use of Latin used in prescription
  • a) Latin is universal language that can be understood throughout the world.
  • b)It has exact and definite meaning.
  • c) The patient cannot read prescription easily.

#How will you handle the prescription ?

  • The prescription should be taken by pharmacist himself.
  • The pharmacist should read the prescription carefully.
  • For any error or confusion in the prescription, consult with the prescriber .
  • Any questions asked by patient should be answered with carefully.
  • Pharmacist should keep important secrete information of prescription.
  • Pharmacist should not add or omit or substitute any ingredient or alter the composition of prescription without permission of the prescriber.
  • Pharmacist should not any comment on the physician.
  • Maintain the cleanliness during preparation, Compounding and dispensing of the medicine 💊.
  • Accurate quantities should be taken for preparing dosage form.
  • Dispense the preparation in a suitable container.
  • Direct the patient about use of pre or medicine 💊💉.
  • If the mistake should be found in prescription do not share or any comment infront of patient because it will affect the faith of the patient on physician.
  • The pharmacist should always behave with ethics with the patient,his fellow pharmacist, physician,etc.

1 drop                      = 0.06 ml 

1 teaspoonful         =4.0 ml

1 desertspoonful    =8.0 ml

1 tablespoonful       =15.0 ml

1 wineglassful         =60.0 ml

1 teacupful               =120.0 ml

1 tumblerful              =240.0 ml
