Properties Of Solid State And Their Classification On The Bassis Of Forces Of Secondary Board
Properties of solid state:-
- Solids are rigid and have definite Shape and volume.
- Their volume are definite and do not depend on the vessel in which they are kept.
- The intermolecular spaces in solids are less and intermolecular forces are strong
- The position of constituent particles ( atom, ion or molecules) of solid are definite and these particles vibrate about their mean position.
- Solid substance are almost non- compressible.
- The density of solid is greater than liquid or gas.
- The property of diffusion in solids are often found lesser as compared to gasses and liquid.
- Mostly solids on heating convert into liquid state. This process is called melting and tha temperature at which solid is converted into liquid state called melting point. Classification of solid on the basis of diffrent bonding forces: Solid substance can be classified into following four classes which depend on the nature of inter molecular or inter ionic forces between their constituents particles. 1.molecular solids. 1 these solids are made up of molecular structural unit. Their molecules are held together by weak vander waal's forces or hydrogen bonding. Their melting and boiling point are low and these are found in the form of molecules in each state. 2.ionic solid - These are rigid solids having high melting and boiling points and their constituent particles are ions. These are strong electrostatic forces of attraction in these compound containing anions and cations .These solids are brittle in nature and readily soluble in polar solvent like water.Their aqueous solution is conductor of electricity in solid state .These compound do not contain molecular units whereas they form crystal lattice. These are represented by empirical formula. These are transformed to other substances but they do not leave their main indentity 3.Metalic solid-metallic solid are made up of cations (kernals)which expand in suitable manner in a sea of free electrons. These free electrons are also free to move in solid state so metals are conductor of electricity.each metal ion loses its one or more electron from which sea of electron is formed .when electric field is aaplied ,these free electrons are moved from low potential to high potential and electric current is passed in opposite direction ,metals shows properties of ductility, malleablity and metallic lustre. Heat is also passed through metals due to presence of free electrons. 4.covalent or network solid-their constituent particles are atom. They have covalent bond btwn their molecules.diamond is hard and non conductor of electricity but graphite are soft and conductor of electricity. Thanks you soo much for reading
